Direct Flights from Vietnam to the USA?

Vietnam Airlines has announced renewed plans to open direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to the USA (Los Angeles and San Francisco). If approved these will be the first non-stop flights between the two countries since the Vietnam War.
