Udaipur

Another of Rajasthan’s great cities, Udaipur is probably the most lovely and most romantic of all.  Ruled by Udaipur’s mighty Maharanas for centuries, the city was the only one of the major Rajput cities not to be defeated by Muslim invaders. 

The city’s strong history is reflected in the imposing architecture of the City Palace.  The huge fortress walls rising from the shores of the Lake create an impression of impregnability.  The Palace now houses a fascinating museum, testament to the turbulent and interesting history of Udaipur and her Maharanas, who were supposed to have been cursed many generations ago.

Other highlights of this lovely city include the famous Lake Pichola itself.  It is possible to take short boat rides on the lake where you can observe the white marble beauty of the Lake Palace, as well as visiting the Jag Mandir palace, built in 1615.  For those not staying at the Lake Palace but who wish to treat themselves, dinner at this excellent hotel will be unforgettable experience.  The romance and splendour of the Lake Palace has escaped not even Hollywood who used it as a setting for the James Bond film “Octopussy”.

As well as numerous temples, this is a wonderful city to simply explore.  The warren of alleys in the old town reveals some beautiful havelis, as well as a lovely collection of shops selling traditional Rajasthani handicrafts such as leather shoes, rugs and fabric.
