THE SCOOP With an 18-hole golf course soon to be completed, the Sofitel Royal Angkor Golf & Spa Resort is the leading ‘resort-style’ property in Siem Reap. This is a perfect hotel for longer stays, and for unwinding after a day at the temples. A large range of facilities makes this a great resort for families.
THE LOCATION The location of the Sofitel Royal Angkor Golf & Spa Resort is decent, but not fantastic. It is located on the main road to the temples and markets, two kilometres from the old market and five kilometres from the temples. Tuk-tuk drivers wait outside the hotel and take travellers into town for $1US. The Siem Reap airport is 7km away (approximately 20 minutes by car).
THE GOODS Rooms: All 239 guest rooms are stylish and modern with comfortable furnishings. Large windows provide lots of natural light and views that overlook the pool or landscaped gardens. All guest rooms feature shower and bath, IDD telephone, cable TV, free in-house movies, mini-bar, tea/coffee making facilities, in-room safe, air-conditioning and ceiling fans. There are 173 Superior rooms, 45 Deluxe rooms and 21 Suites. Our Preferred Room: Deluxe rooms are our favourites as they have private balconies with views over the resort’s ornamental lake. At 45 square metres they feel noticeably bigger than the Superior rooms (36 square metres).
Restaurants: There are three restaurants at the Sofitel Royal Angkor Golf & Spa Resort, as well as two bars. The hotel boasts the largest choice for in-house dining in Siem Reap. The Citadel Restaurant serves Western and Asian food in a bright and airy atmosphere. Mouhot’s Dream serves fine French cuisine in an intimate setting. Leaf on the Stone is a traditional Japanese Teppenyaki establishment. The Wayfarer Bar & Club serves good ‘pub’ food, and the Serpent Bar is the poolside eatery, and serves a range of simple food. Cultural shows are performed at the hotel on select evenings during high season (October to March).
Facilities: The Sofitel Royal Angkor Golf & Spa Resort features a swimming pool, health club, excellent spa and massage centre, on-call doctor, babysitting services, concierge and souvenir shops. An 18-hole golf course will be completed in mid-2006.
Business Travellers: Conference rooms and meeting rooms furnished with all the latest equipment.
THE POOL The Sofitel features an enormous palm-fringed swimming pool (the largest in Siem Reap) surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens.
THE FAMILY Babysitting is available at the hotel on request, and baby cots are provided free of charge. Acres of lawn, a large swimming pool and some of the biggest standard guest rooms in Siem Reap make this hotel a good choice for families. Children three years and under sharing existing bedding stay free, and discounts are provided for children aged four to twelve.
FOR THE DISABLED TRAVELLER No facilities for the disabled traveller.
THE COMPETITION The Sofitel Royal Angkor Golf & Spa Resort’s nearest competitor is Le Meridien, but the latter does not have the same resort-style appeal or the same lovely landscaped gardens.
