Many of the old towns, villages, factories and farms we pass will disappear forever with the completion of the world’s largest hydroelectricity project, the Sanxia (Three Gorges) Dam, later this decade. The project will create a remarkable reservoir whose waters will extend some 550 kilometres back from the sturdy dam walls.

We visit hilltop temples, including the abode of the Emperor of Hell perched high above the soon-to-be-flooded town of Fengdu, take local boats into the beautiful Small Gorges, and end our cruise at the bulk of the Three Gorges Dam itself.
