Itinerary

Days 1 - 2 ~ Arrive in Shanghai

Arrive in Shanghai and transfer to your hotel. The next day begins with a walk along the historic riverfront Bund, home to an impressive collection of Art Deco buildings, a remnant of Shanghai’s days as a great colonial-era trading port, and today home to some of the trendiest watering holes, classiest dining venues and top-end designer shops. Explore the Old Chinese Quarter, with its bustling local markets, and the
contrasting tranquility of Yu Garden before you venture to the superb Shanghai Museum (easily the finest museum in the country) and neighbouring People’s Square, a hive of local activity. End your day with a visit to the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre for a glimpse of Shanghai’s future.

Days 3 - 5 ~ Travel to the ancient canal town of Zhujiajiao

Travel to the ancient canal town of Zhujiajiao and stroll the backstreets, cruise the waterways and absorb the charming, old world atmosphere. You will have the chance to shop for local handicrafts and try some of the regional cuisine, including delicious steamed glutinous rice dumplings and wonton soup. Back in Shanghai, join some children at a local community centre before taking in an awesome evening acrobatics performance. The next morning, view a unique private collection of propaganda art hidden away on a residential block, then head back to the Old Quarter for a fascinating walking tour that will give you an insight into real Shanghai street life at untouristed local markets. This is a great opportunity to get some stunning photographs of the China of old. Finish up at the contrasting, modern Shikumen developments of Xintiandi in the
French Concession, where modern villas and cafés sit next to ancient neighbourhood blocks. Later this evening take in the glittering lights of Shanghai from the deck of your boat on an evening cruise down the Huangpu River. On day 5, transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
