The pagoda, built in 1892, was largely spared destruction by the Khmer Rouge and houses a revered ‘Emerald Buddha’ – akin to the Emerald Buddha held in Bangkok’s Grand Palace – as well as a ‘Golden Buddha’ encrusted with more than 9,000 diamonds. Later you will visit the fascinating National Museum to gain an appreciation of the splendour of Khmer artwork and culture, and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek to learn a little about the insanity of the tragic Pol Pot era. Days 2 - 3 ~ The Killing Fields & Oudong City![]() Building facades Visit chilling Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocidal Crimes; this moving museum serves as a poignant reminder of the years of the Khmer Rouge and is the companion site to the Killing Fields. Head northeast through lovely countryside to the former capital of Oudong, stopping en route at an artisan village. Little remains of the city which served as the capital of Cambodia for 248 years, at which point the French pressured the court to relocate to Phnom Penh.
